Focusing Your Mind for Clear Vision

A four-week course for starting or deepening a meditation practice.
Learn how to calm your body and quiet your mind for clarity and serenity

Insight Meditation is a practical way to bring your attention to the present moment so you can
see clearly. Focusing your mind in this way is like focusing a telescope or microscope in order to see
an object in more detail.

The only way we know to relate to the world around us is through the filter of our thinking mind, and this separates us from life and results in a painful sense of isolation and confusion about what is real.
When your mind is congested with chronic thinking, your attention is scattered and out of focus. Everything that you experience is distorted by interpretive thought and you get a blurry picture of reality. By focusing on what your mind thinks about something, you miss seeing it as it actually is. Most of us mistake our mental narration for reality and believe that our perception is truth.

Meditation is about learning to sustain your attention on a sensory experience, instead of a thought. It awakens your senses, concentrates your energy, and focuses your mind. As you practice holding your attention on a simple repetitive sensation such as the body’s natural breathing, your mind becomes steady and you begin to see things in an entirely new way.

This practice enables you to experience things around you as they are, not as you think they are or should be. It connects you to reality in a profound way that eases chronic anxiety and enables peace, joy, clarity, and contentment.

This class is for beginners as well as seasoned meditators. In the tradition of Theravadin Buddhism, you will learn how to focus on physical sensations as a way to relax the body and quiet the mind. The course includes instructions, silent sitting and walking periods, a Dharma talk, and group discussion. We will have chairs, a kneeling bench, kneeling chairs, or cushions available for you.
The class location, Stillwater Landing, is a stunning, private nature retreat overlooking Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains with fields, woods, a majestic waterfront landing, and spacious dock.
